About Kingston and Richmond NHS FT Functional Skills

English

Functional Skills are the fundamental English and math's skills that people need for their working and personal lives. People can study for the qualifications in practical ways and apply core skills to real-life situations.

Successive governments have championed these flexible courses to equip people with the essential skills they need to succeed. Anyone can access functional skills and offers many opportunities for individuals for apprenticeships, any other further learning and career development opportunities.  Staff will be required to start by registering onto a free online functional practice website titled BKSB.

BKSB is designed to test learners on their English skills via a series of exercises. Learners are required to reached a Level 2 standard or above on BKSB to be eligible to arrange a final assessment. If a pass score is achieved the learner will be awarded with a GCSE equivalent and certificate.

The final English assessment which takes place online consists of 3 separate assessments:

  • Reading 1 hour
  • Writing 1 hour
  • SLC (speaking, listening and communicating) 90 minute group discussion

Additional support is available such as workbooks and mock exam papers.
